Interior decoration should give an aesthetic look to a room as well as functional. A room may look very nice with very expensive accessories; but that doesn’t mean that it’s so functional. So it’s very important to setup and decorate any room with a nice combination of look and function.

Theme
Always choose a theme to decorate a room. It can be a contemporary or an ancient look with antiques and nice collections. Or a countryside theme can work better in a modern living style.

Entry Way/Veranda
Entry way near the main door is the place that gets first notice from a visitor. Decorate this place carefully at the same time functionally. This is the place where you need to hide the shoes and slippers. Dedicate a basket or hooks for umbrellas and hats. Place a nice vase with fresh flowers to welcome the guest with fresh look and smell.

Living Room
Any room needs its own focal point; a nice view from window can be a focal point for a living room. Arrange your sofa or couch facing the window. Arrange the sofa and chairs convenient for conversation. That way when you host a bunch of friends or relatives or within the family, it would be nice to face each other and talk.

A rug in front of the sofa and the center coffee table should be in a way to pull everything together in the room. For example an expensive leather cocktail bench can be a better choice for a room where you have fabric sofa, an accent chair of different colors, wooden side tables and other different elements.

Choose a coffee table slightly lower or the same height of the sofa, as a taller coffee table would give a downsized look of a room. If the coffee tables and the side tables have drawers, they can conceal some of the things in the room to avoid any clutters.

Bedroom
This is the place where you would spend most of the time in 24-hour day. So there is nothing wrong in spending some money to get a comfortable bed. Choose high quality cotton spread sheets for the summer. Bed sheets and cover may compliment with the room wall color. Remember your bed is the focal point in the bedroom. An artwork or picture above the headboard wall is an added touch to a bedroom. TV in a bedroom would be a distraction for some people who are not quick sleepers. Place a comfy chair in the bedroom to sit, relax and read.

Paint/Wall Color
Avoid very dark color paints on walls as they recede the size of the room. Lighter hue always gives a wider and bright look. At the same time a cozy bedroom need not to be so bright. It’s a place to spend the night calmly.

Accessories and Artwork
Empty walls give naked look to a room. Hang nice artworks or pictures on a plain wall. Place natural plants where it’s possible. Statues give personality to a room and the owner. Use spotlights to highlight an artwork or your collections.

Clutters
Avoid clutters: Unwanted and unnecessary things need not to be in any livable space in a house. Periodically survey each room and take away the things that you don’t need anymore

Media Center/Entertainment Center
Use a cord or wire concealing hose (available in the market) to avoid showing the cables around the electronic components in an entertainment center.

Use wicket baskets to store small articles in a bookshelf. If your house is near a busy road, cover a bookshelf or media rack with a glass door to avoid dust accumulation.

Library
Maintain a library or a reading room with a good number of books. This encourages the kids in your house to develop reading habits.

Home Office
Improve your home office setup with ergonomically designed office furniture as many people, in this heavily technology oriented world, telecommute often or spend lot of time in front of computers and Internet. Use organizers to store all the statements, bills and office supplies etc.
